One of the smallest countries on the African continent, Rwanda lies within the Great Rift Valley where East Africa converges with the Great African Lakes region. Rwanda is often referred to as the Land of a Thousand Hills owing to the mountainous landscape throughout the country. It is in these high mountains, steep valleys and great lakes where you will find the true magic of Rwanda.

The relatively small size of Rwanda is one of the country’s greatest assets for tourists looking to combine their East Africa safari to Kenya or Tanzania with a Gorilla Trekking adventure. A short drive from the capital city of Kigali will have you outside the Volcanoes National Park with relative ease – saving you valuable time on a busy African adventure. The Volcanoes National Park is home to more than one third of the world’s remaining Mountain Gorillas. The gorillas can be found on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains, deep within the park’s thick forest. Visitor numbers into the park are strictly controlled with only a set number of trekking permits available each day. While this adds to the cost of your safari, the price is worth the experience and the smaller groups ensures a far more intimate experience with these magnificent creatures.

For those with a love and passion for Primates, a visit to Rwanda will not be complete without exploring the Nyungwe Forest National Park located in the south west of the country. The Nyungwe Forest is one of Africa’s oldest forests with a rich variety of biodiversity. The park’s most popular attraction is the small chimpanzee population but there are 12 other primate species waiting to be discovered. You will love the beautiful forest walks and views across the forest from the suspension bridge. With an impressive variety of tea plantations outside the forest, a farm tour is worth consideration.

If wildlife diversity is what you are after, a short drive to Akagera National Park will have you in safari heaven. Located on the east of the country, the deep forest give way to the open savannah’s resembling other East Africa safari locations like Kenya and Tanzania. Here big game species such as elephant and buffalo can be seen together with an impressive variety of antelope, general game and the accompanying predators. A visit to Akagera is not complete without a cruise on the expansive lake for a unique safari encounter.

While primates, wildlife and beautiful scenery are certainly the focus of any Rwanda vacation, a visit is not complete without indulging in the country’s rich culture and deeply divided history. A visit to the world famous Genocide Memorial in Kigali is of utmost importance.
